Winter Weather Products

Severe Weather Europe

  • There is no better source for information on the polar vortex and wintry weather in my opinion—but even I need to crack open the weather glossary for some of what’s posted here.
  • Learn more about the polar vortex!

WPC Probabilistic Winter Guidance

  • The most accurate, albeit frustratingly stingy, snow forecast available from NOAA
  • Select the different times along the top and the various thresholds (>1”, etc) on the right.
  • If this source isn’t showing much accumulation and others are, it has been my experience that this WPC guidance has been accurate 100% of the time.

Winter Storm Severity Index

  • Analyzes forecast models for expected conditions then factors in things population density.
  • A very good resource when snow is on the way to know what kind of impacts to expect.
  • Any time we have hit “extreme” impacts (purple) there have been school delays and/or cancellations.
  • Often when we hit “major” impacts (red), there are at least school delays

Experimental Snowfall Amount Potential

  • Ever seen the snow maps from the national weather service on social media? These are very similar.
  • Very much “experimental” in my opinion as they are often overdone.
  • Fun to look at and they are adding new features more and more.

Severe Thunderstorms

Storm Prediction Center

  • Severe Thunderstorm Forecasts
  • The SPC day one and day two outlooks are almost always spot on
  • If something shows up anywhere in the day four to eight outlook, it’s worth paying attention to
